Prefilled Pods vs 10ml Refill Bottles: Which Actually Costs Less in the UK?

Both formats put the same thing in your device. One arrives sealed in a plastic cartridge, the other in a 10ml bottle you pour yourself. The price difference between them is far larger than most people realise, and the new e-liquid duty in October 2026 changes the sums again.

Prefilled pods come sealed and ready. You click one in and vape until it is empty, then throw it away and click in the next. Convenient, and the flavour is chosen for you.

Refillable pods come empty. You fill them from a 10ml bottle, and refill the same pod many times before replacing it. More steps, and considerably cheaper.

UK rules cap a pod or tank at 2ml and a nicotine e-liquid bottle at 10ml, so a single 10ml bottle fills a 2ml pod five times.

What the October 2026 duty does to this

From 1 October 2026, Vaping Products Duty adds £2.20 per 10ml to every e-liquid sold in the UK. With VAT applied on top of the duty, that works out at roughly 26p per millilitre.

Crucially, it is charged on volume, so it applies to both formats at the same rate per ml.

Here is the part worth understanding. Because the duty is a fixed amount per millilitre, it is a much larger percentage increase on the cheaper format. A 10ml bottle roughly doubles in cost per ml. A prefilled pod goes up by a little over ten per cent.

So the gap narrows, from roughly seven times to roughly four times. Refilling stays clearly cheaper, but the headline saving is smaller than it used to be, and pod prices will look less absurd by comparison.

Beyond the price

Cost is not the only difference, and for some people it is not the deciding one:

• Flavour choice. Bottled liquid gives you the whole range. Prefilled pods limit you to whatever your device manufacturer produces.
• Strength choice. Bottles come in 5mg, 10mg and 20mg. Prefilled pods are often only offered at one or two strengths, usually the highest.
• Mixing strengths. With bottles you can half-fill from two strengths to land between them. You cannot do that with a sealed pod.
• Waste. One refillable pod replaces a lot of plastic cartridges.
• Convenience. Prefilled genuinely is easier. No filling, no waiting for the coil to soak, no chance of spilling in a bag.

When prefilled pods still make sense

In fairness, there are cases where paying more per ml is the right call:

• You vape very little, so the absolute difference is a few pounds a month rather than fifty
• You are travelling and would rather not carry an open bottle
• You are brand new to vaping and want the simplest possible start
• Your device only takes proprietary pods

For everyone else, the cost gap is large enough that the extra thirty seconds of filling a pod pays for itself several times over.

Five, if your pod holds the UK maximum of 2ml. Smaller pods give you more.

How often do I replace a refillable pod?
Usually every one to two weeks, depending on how sweet the liquid is and how hard you push the device. Dark, sweet flavours gunk a coil faster than light fruit ones.

Can I put any 10ml nic salt in any refillable pod?
Almost always, provided the liquid is 50/50 VG/PG and the device is a mouth-to-lung kit. Thicker high-VG liquid will not wick properly through small coils.

Yes. It is charged on the liquid, wherever it is sold, at 22p per ml before VAT.
